This Just In! The Joker Wins
The Joker finally wins. If only it were true. If only, just once The Joker takes the prize, Batman falls, costume rent asunder, unmasked for the world to see, the great Bruce Wayne exposed as the greatest vigilante the comics world has ever known. He’s Batman’s reason for existing after all, literally speaking if you go by movie lore.
But even in the comics, where would batman be without The Joker to chase after. His nefarious deeds are legendary, what good are ordinary criminal motives like those possessed by Catwoman or Penguin, one big score and they’re off vacationing on some island. But The Joker, he’s that bit of insanity Batman barely hides within himself. The other side of a thin coin, and the perfect example of what Batman resists being every time he puts on that costume.
So why does The Joker always lose?
As a superhero, there’s nothing all that super about Batman. At the core, he’s just a detective with advanced equipment. So why does he constantly foil the greatest villain Gotham’s ever known? Simply put, because the world can’t have a Joker win. Not the dark pages of the comic book world they do battle in, and certainly not the real world that reads those pages for escape. The idea of an obviously insane villain winning out over the guardian of good goes against our collective psyche.
So no matter how popular The Joker becomes among the comic villains readers enjoy, no matter how many of those readers embrace him on Halloween in costume, there will always be those with Batman Costumes roaming the streets as well, celebrating the triumph of good over evil. And unfortunately for those of us who would love to see the guy with the grin win just once, nothing but disappointment.
